A longtime Geneva resident was found dead Friday afternoon at a golf course in the western suburb.

John A. Gaines, 74, was found about 1:30 p.m., lying facedown in a creek near the sixth hole of the Geneva Golf Club at 831 South Street, Geneva police said in a release.

Gaines, the husband of Geneva Chamber of Commerce President Jean Gaines, was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.

Authorities are investigating the circumstances leading up to his death, and have not found any indication of foul play or criminal activity, the statement said.

St. Charles residents Barbara and Bob Telfer discovered the body when a golf ball went into the creek. Barbara Telfer tells the Kane County Chronicle in Geneva that she called 911 after her husband looked twice to make sure it wasn't a prank.
