NCAA Men's Golf Championships 2015: Results, Leaderboard Standings from Friday

The 2015 college sports season is coming to an end, but not before the men's golf championship takes it turn in the spotlight. Taking place at Concession Golf Club in Florida, the nation's 30 best teams have gathered to determine which one will wear the crown.

One thing that is guaranteed to come from this year's tournament is a new national champion. Alabama, which won back-to-back titles in 2013 and 2014, missed the cut after finishing seventh at the Noblesville Regional two weeks ago.

Florida State enters the championship as the No. 1 overall seed, but the Seminoles will have plenty of stiff competition with the likes of Texas (No. 2) and Illinois (No. 3) among many in the field.

Here are the updated daily results from Bradenton, Florida, and a recap of the action.

The top-seeded Seminoles got off to a rough start on Friday, firing a 10-over-par 298 as a team. No one player had a horrible day for Florida State, as all five players shot under 80, but only Jack Maguire managed to break par (71).

Florida State head coach Trey Jones told Dustin Tackett of the Tallahassee Democrat on Thursday the thing that's been so special about his team in 2015 is the ability to put itself in a position to win in the final round.

"We haven't [had a team as consistently good as this team]," Jones said. "We've only lost to 12 teams all year. So every time we've gone out, we've had a chance to win a final round, and expected to win in the final round. And that's an attribute to their preparation and their competitive spirit."

While there are still three days left in this portion of the tournament, the Seminoles will have their work cut out for them. They can't afford to lose any more ground with Illinois coming out of the gate on fire.

Speaking of the Illini, they were the only team to finish under par on Friday. Junior Thomas Detry was the star of the show, finishing with a four-under 68, per John Borneman of the Chicago Tribune:

Following Detry were Brian Campbell and Dylan Meyer, who each shot an even-par 72. They will take a two-shot lead over one of the surprise teams on Friday.

Georgia, which came into the tournament ranked outside the top 25, got solid outings from everyone to finish even par. Zach Healy led the Bulldogs' charge with a two-under 70, and fifth-ranked Lee McCoy put together a solid one-over 73.

Speaking to Wayne Cavadi of NCAA.com after the round, McCoy said the layout at Concession didn't favor his style of play.

"The greens are really tough," McCoy said. "In all honesty it's not a golf course that sets up really well for me, it’s really open off the tee and it doesn’t seem to let up, it’s really long and I’m not one of the longer hitters out here."

Even though McCoy isn't a huge fan of how long the course plays, he was able to hide it most of the round despite finishing nearly five shots above his season average of 68.78, per GolfWeek.com. Being able to come out of Friday in the top spot will also provide a confidence boost.

Gudmundur Kristjansson of East Tennessee State is playing the tournament as an individual and proceeded to get a hole-in-one on the sixth hole, per Graham Hall of The Alligator:

That would be as good as Kristjansson's day got, as he finished six over par with a 78. Detry and Claudio Correa from South Florida holds the individual lead at four under par.

Correa was on fire through his first 12 holes at seven under par, including an eagle on No. 3 after starting on the back nine, via USF Men's Golf:

Despite Correa's stellar opening round, the Bulls couldn't capitalize on it. The effort was wasted by a combined 10-over-par effort from Ryan Fricker and Rigel Fernandes, though, being tied for eighth place does keep them in the hunt.

There is certainly plenty of drama building in the men's golf championship. Illinois does have a small lead, but with three teams within four shots, the Illini will not be able to keep the pressure on other teams in order to capture the first national title in school history.

It's a wide-open field with plenty of time left for top teams like Texas and Florida State to make a move. All of these teams know pressure coming out of the regionals, so the opening day is a nice starting point even though it's not the end of the road by any means.
