Looking to golf this season? You should read this. - Wausau Daily Herald
WAUSAU â" All the snow has finally melted, and for the first time in months, grass is visible. As duffers warm up their swings, Daily Herald Media compiled a list of region's golf courses to find out when they open and if they are planning anything new or interesting for the season.
Rib Mountain Golf Course
3607 N. Mountain Road, Rib Mountain. 715-845-5570
When you can start golfing: The course opened March 14 and will remain accessible to golfers from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. every day.
New offerings or unique perks: Even though it's chilly out, Mike Oliva, one of the co-owners, said that golfing early in the season has its advantages. The course's proximity to Rib Mountain means that players get a pretty distinct view of skiers as they â" the golfers â" try to score a hole-in-one. "It's kind of neat to watch (people) ski and golf at the same time," Oliva said, adding that there are a group of "local guys" who regularly ski, golf and then eat at the course's Italian restaurant, Carmelo's.
Tribute Golf Course
1001 Golf Club Road, Wausau. 715-675-3663
When you can start golfing: The course will open its doors Wednesday, March 25. Weather permitting, the course will open in the late morning and close at dark in the cooler months, said Andrew Spear, pro shop manager at Tribute Golf Course. In the summer, Tribute will be open from 7 a.m. to dark.
New offerings or unique perks: For those golfers who want a challenge, Tribute Golf Course holds a special outing that tests your night vision. Several times each summer, the course holds an event in which groups can play in the dark, with golf balls and a select number of holes that "light up," Spear said.
Maple Hills Golf Club
N6621 Cardinal Lane, Wittenberg. 715-253-2448.
When you can start golfing: The nine-holf golf course opened March 16, and will remain open every day, weather permitting.
New staff, offerings or events: This year, Maple Hill's restaurant will feature a new menu with seafood specials and upgraded food items, said Paul Hegewald, president at Maple Hills.
The Club X to C Golf Course
W890 County Road C, Gleason. 715-536-1546.
When you can start golfing: The club plans to open near April 1, but interested golfers should call ahead.
New offerings or unique perks: Before April 1, the club is offering an unlimited golf membership for the entire season at $175 per person, said Adam Paulus, owner of Club X to C Golf Course.
Pine Valley Golf Course
301 136th Ave, Marathon City. 715-443-2848.
When you can start golfing: All 18 holes, available with power carts, opened March 15, 7 a.m. to 9 p.m.
New offerings or unique perks: Early birds can benefit from a new deal Pine Valley is offering this year. Before 10 a.m. Mondays through Fridays, golfers can play all 18 holes with a cart for $26, said Ryan Wendorf, head golf professional. On April 18, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., Pine Valley will also host a TaylorMade Demo Day so that golfers can test out new gear. The golf course also features one of the area's larger program for junior golfers that begins June 16, running every Tuesday for six weeks, Wendorf said. Around 60 kids participate in the annual program, he said.
Trapp River Golf Course
T1202 Highway WW, Wausau. 715-675-3044.
When you can start golfing: The course is currently closed and will open when weather permits. When it does open, the course will stay open every day, 9 a.m. to dusk.

Indianhead Golf Course
966 Indianhead Drive, Mosinee. 715-693-6066.
When it opens: The course opened March 18.
New staff, offerings or events: After experiencing success with its fall Headfest event, Indianhead has planned another Headfest event this spring, said Eric Oestreich, general manager and PGA professional. On April 25, interested players can compete in the four-person scramble tournament. "Because the demand has been so great, we're adding a second event," Oestreich said. The next day, on April 26, the golf course will be holding its first Club Swap, similar to Rib Mountain's annual ski swap, Oestreich said.
