Top-10 golfer Lexi Thompson's provocative 'Golf Digest' cover - USA TODAY
World No. 9 and third-ranked American golfer Lexi Thompson is on the cover of next monthâs issue of Golf Digest â" the âFitness & Powerâ issue â" which should hit newsstands in the middle of April.
Not so coincidentally, May was also the month Paulina Gretzky posed for the cover of Golf Digest for little reason other than her relationship with Dustin Johnson and her attractiveness.
But the magazineâs editor says this is different, and it is.
âWeâve come a long way from a year ago when the LPGA condemned our choice of Paulina Gretzky (and Holly Sonders in 2013) as the cover images for Golf Digestâs annual fitness issue. Mea culpa, ladies. You can have stunning beauty and the highest level of golf performance at the same time, as demonstrated this year by Lexi, Stacy Lewis, Cheyenne Woods and Michelle Wie: Have you ever seen anyone more fit in evening wear?
LPGA players not only outdrive the average guy by 20-plus yards, but they do it with the same clubhead speed we have. We can learn more from them not because they swing like us, but because we should swing like them. They donât just muscle the ball and make up for swing flaws with strength. And our whole staff concurs.â
Though I think it could have done with the âmea culpa, ladies,â (âmea culpaâ would have sufficed) Jerry Tarde, the chairman of the magazine, is mostly on point. The other women featured on the Fitness and Power issue were merely associated with golf. Lexi Thompson, who was the youngest ever U.S. Open competitor at age 12, and has won one major and six tournaments even though she just turned 20, is a golfer.
Thompson herself was very exited.
And for those worried about double standards: Yes it seems that women golfers often have to dress more provocatively to score magazine covers, but letâs not forget whoâs on the cover, and seems to have forgotten his shirt, on this monthâs Golf Digest.
